Volunteer Guidelines

Using Mobile Phones

1

Who much time is this going to take?

Once you are paired with the student, a reasonable target is that you would conduct 2-4 hours of tutoring per month.... or think of it, as an hour every week or other week.

Everyone is busy and this is just a guideline for you to work through with your student. Some of our volunteers hit it off and frequently engage more often.  But that is up to you and your student.

2

Do I need to know another language?

Maruysa students are so excited to have a peer to learn and practice English, any conversation is welcome.

In a perfect world, you and your tutor may match in language.   But it is not a requirement, we have found just your energy and curiosity will be enough to make it a success and to improve Marusya's students English.

3

How are we going to connect?

You can connect on any channel you feel comfortable that works for you and your student.

We have had students use all of these free channels.

Whatsapp

Facetime

Google Meet

Zoom

Because WhatsApp is the most popular messaging app around the world, different than in the US, we find that is the most popular.

What do we talk about?

Totally ...up to you.  Most students want someone to converse with them in English and learn new words.  We have a questions form to help you get started but any conversation has value

Why do you want to learn English?
What did you do this weekend?

What is your favorite movie?

What sports do you like?
Tell me about your school?
What animal would you like as a pet?
Where do you live?
How would your friends describe you?
Do you like karaoke?
What is your favorite subject at school?

In addition, students may also want specific help regarding homework or upcoming exams, then volunteers will be expected to focus on that aspect only.

How is your hero?

Where would you like to visit?

What makes you laugh the most?
